Who is Bhootnath?
Shiva is the lord of Bhoots..

Who is Bhoot?
Ego is the Bhoot!

Ego (Ahamkaar) is the Bhoot. The one who is *not* but still appears to be..

Bhoot-nath = Lord of all Bhoots = Lord of all Egos
Consciousness = Bhootnath = Lord of Bhoot (Ego)

in Puranas, Shiva is shown as Bhootnath and those Bhoots are shown as Ghosts. In reality it must be an objectified way of presenting the eternal truth of the Upnishads....as consciousness being the master of what is not but appears to be (Bhoot/Ego)

Shiva being in the 'Smashan' with 'Bhasm' (sacrifice of Ego) and wearing 'munds' (ultimate surrender) is also symbolic representation of the same truth...Shiva as consciousness adorns ITself with the 'sacrifice' of the 'false-self (ego) '.

THAT Shiva of Smashan is clearly the depiction of complete surrender and the  Shiva self reveling in it.

The beautiful symbolism done by the great story tellers!

Eventually meaning gets lost to most but nevertheless it is still there...

So to summarize Shiva symbolism;
1) Linga - The symbolism of formless consciousness.
Nandi - Ceaseless attention on IT

2) Bhoot = Ego
Bhootnath  = Master of Ego. That is to say, The Consciousness is the Master (basis) of unreal self (Ego)

3) Shiva with Bhasm & Heads around neck in the smashan is the ultimate depiction of the complete surrender of the thought based unreal-self to the Highest....Shiva...Consciousness..
The Smashan of Shiva is where the unreal dies and the REAL shines forth!

_/\_

In my consciousness, i see the REAL Nandi, the REAL Bhootnath and together the space where i (bhoot/ego) straddle... That's the Smashan - where Shiva pervades & the unreal fights for survival.

One fine day, the Aahuti will be complete...Bhasm will spread all round and the head will be worn around the neck-less neck of the pure consciousness...

........
The beautiful thing about Bhootnath ji is that it does not coax, call or say anything to the Bhoot...IT just seems to be silently watching the monkey-Bhoot...waiting it to wear out & 'look' at Bhootnath ji. When the Bhoot finally manages to have attention like Nandi, the Bhoot dissolves and Bhootnath ji remains alone as name-less, formless consciousness.

Bhoot never 'becomes' Bhootnath, it just disolves in the light of Bhootnath ji...

Although Bhoot is not there at all and so it is termed as 'Bhoot', however, it is there as an illusion - a very strong illusion! Only the light of Consciousness can see it for what it is. Until then it is all a
Real, solid Nanga naach of Bhoot nagri!
